The best way to get a glimpse to Colombian countryside culture
Colombian cyclists have reached the podiums several times, and this is no coincidence. Just like our champions Egan Bernal, Nairo Quintana, and Rigoberto Uran, many Colombians grow up surrounded by mountains. Three enormous mountain ranges divide our country, hence hopping on a bike most days is normal around here. However, Colombians are rewarded for this effort with breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape.
Therefore, a nice way to get to know Colombian culture and its landscape is by taking a bike ride. The mountains around the Town of Guatapé make a beautiful scenery for this. You can spot traditional farms with fascinating architecture and vibrant flower gardens along the way. The smell of the flowers, the rustling of the tree leaves and the chickens pecking around alongside friendly cats, dogs, and cows, offer a glimpse into our harmonious relationship with animals and nature. Watch for the campesinos tending their crops and the incredible variety of birds and butterflies and other bugs flitting through the air.
Fritters, fresh fruit juices, and of course, coffee are staples of Colombian daily life. Stoping at a “tienda” along the road is a must if you want to taste some delicious empanadas, arepas, or corn cakes with a steaming cup of Colombian coffee or a refreshing fruit juice (lulo, mango, and maracuyá are particularly delicious options). In some “tiendas”, you can also find “bocadillo,” a traditional candy made from guayaba fruit and wrapped in a dried plantain leaf. This sweet treat acts as a natural protein or energy bar, just like what many Colombian cyclists carry for a mid-ride boost.
Remember to wave hello to everyone you meet, as Colombians, especially those in Antioquia, are renowned for their respect and warmth towards neighbors and visitors. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself drawn into friendly conversation!
